Life is One Long Hiking Trip

Life is one long hiking trip and throughout the hike we encounter slippery slopes, storms, and rough terrain that can slow us down. We tell people all the time that Jesus is with us in the storm, but I think for a lot of people, while they know that, choose to stay in the storm in hopes that Jesus will calm it and make it disappear. Because for whatever reason we don’t want to face it, may it be fear, doubt or insecurity. That is not always the case. At times we’re meant to go through the storm as God uses it to transform us and make us stronger. Sure it will be hard, but God never promised us life would be easy. He does promise us He will never leave us and even when we’re not faithful to Him, He is ALWAYS faithful. So as I wrestle with my own thoughts about the changes I’m undergoing in my life, I can no longer linger here in the storm hoping it will go away. Instead I need to push through it and come out on the other side. Will it be easy? No, at times it will be difficult, challenging and even scary. But with faith, trust, commitment and obedience to Jesus Christ I will get through the storm.

So remember, life itself is one long hiking trip filled with adventure, trials and some magnificent views only God can provide. But if you hike this journey alone, without Jesus, you’ll only be lost. So hike by faith with Jesus leading your every step.

I leave you with some quotes from Bonhoeffer that have impacted me these past several days. I pray they impact and encourage you whatever you may be facing.

“We must learn to regard people less in the light of what they do or omit to do, and more in the light of what they suffer.”

“Music… will help dissolve your perplexities and purify your character and sensibilities, and in time of care and sorrow, will keep a fountain of joy alive in you.”
― Dietrich Bonhoeffer

“Being a Christan is less about cautiously avoiding sin than about courageously and actively doing God’s will.”
― Dietrich Bonhoeffer

“Jesus himself did not try to convert the two thieves on the cross; he waited until one of them turned to him.”
