Hiker of the Week: Dean Cattell aka @TaigaAdventures

Dean Cattell aka @TaigaAdventures

AUS_7736For as long as I can remember, I have always been intrigued with the idea of carrying everything you need on your back. I remember saving up money in order to buy the old canvas army rucksack that I stuffed with the essentials to explore the back forty on the farm where I grew up in rural Saskatchewan.

My love of the outdoors continued to grow, and I applied and was accepted into Kelsey Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences, in the Renewable Resources Technology program. Upon my graduation from the program, I secured employment with the government of Saskatchewan and for the next thirty three years worked as a Forestry Worker, Conservation Officer and Park Supervisor.

As a Park Supervisor, I had the opportunity to design, develop and implement a complete 140km plus trail system complete with established back country sites. The Boreal Trail is a destination trail system in Meadow Lake Provincial Park, and is quickly becoming well known throughout Canada.

My interest in hiking/backpacking led to my involvement with several organizations. I am a founding member of Leave No Trace Canada, and currently sit on the Board of Directors. I have also been involved with Saskatchewan Nature and Ecotourism Association, and currently sit on the board of directors with Nature Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Trails Association.

In 2014, I made a quick decision to retire from government service, with the intention of starting a second career. However the local economy had a different idea. For the past two years, I have been working on my social media presence, and growing Taiga Adventures, a small company that sells high quality hiking and backpacking equipment. This year will see the business expand into guided hikes and trips in Meadow Lake Provincial Park on the same trail system that I had the pleasure of developing. I will also be offering AdventureSmart training and Leave No Trace courses.

Growing my social media presence, gave me something to occupy myself, as I had some time on my hands! The past two years has been extremely rewarding as I was selected to be a Brand Ambassador for RockyS2V, Purinize and Ultimate Survival Technologies. The interaction with the companies and other ambassadors has taught me a lot, and I look forward to meeting each and every one of these fine folks in the future. In 2015 I was selected to be a participant on HellHikeandRaft with Epic Social Adventures. For six days, I explored the backcountry of Idaho, backpacking the Seven Devils and rafting the Snake River. Great friendships were formed, and O look forward to another Epic Social Adventure someday.

I am married to a lovely, supporting school teacher Trisha and have three active children (Macy, Chloe, Cooper) that keep us busy with school activities and extracurricular sports. Our summers are usually spent at the family cabin on Pierce Lake and we hope that we will have many Taiga Adventures.

It has been a long time since we last saw you as we spent 18 years where you grew up, we enjoyed that phase of our lives. Now we are winding down and this is our last year of farming, will see what there is in store as time goes.
