So your all excited to do some back country hiking in another country, you’ve got all your gear packed and ready to go just like you normally do. You’ve got all the food prepared and ready; Tent, Sleeping bag, Bear Spray, Medical Supplies and camping fuel, all packed tight in your backpack.
Everything is looking good and you are so pumped, until you get to the border crossing or Customs counter.
You spend all that time packing you forgot to check to see what you can and can’t bring across the border.
What to consider when going backpacking (overnight back country hiking) in another country, in this case coming to Canada.
This blog is written as an example of Traveling by road. Traveling by air will be much the same with the exception of carry-on baggage which will have all new set of rules. Please ensure you look at your airlines website for specific carry-on restrictions.
How to pack:
- Don’t pack like you are leaving tomorrow – Border guards will open and take everything out
- If you are traveling with gifts, do not wrap them before crossing the border. If a gift is wrapped, a Border Services Officer may need to un-wrap the gift to examine the goods you are bringing into Canada.
