Hiking is good for the soul and many other things

When I was little, I would sneak outside in the wee hours of the morning on the weekends.  I would grab a few cheese cubes and some crackers or a piece of bread with Nutella and quietly take off while my parents and brother were still sleeping.  I needed to explore and as long as I was  outside, I was a happy girl.

When I got older, this tradition continued, but it grew into bigger adventures with more exploration involved.  I would get a map out of an area I was interested in visiting and search for places to go hiking there.  I would go anywhere feasible and once the destination was picked, I would prepare, pack some food, dress accordingly and off I would go.  This is a ritual I still perform to this day. 

The main reason for me to hike has always been because I like to explore, but hiking offers so many other things for me and is so many things to me:

I love the solitude and getting away from people, from noise, from the hustle and bustle of the world. I like to slow myself down and just be out in nature, enjoying the sights and sounds and absorbing the quiet energy of the forest.

Hiking to me is like a getaway of sorts, and as I can’t afford to get away on a real vacation every weekend, I go to the forest. There, I find the same type of relaxing vacation type of peace, without spending too much money (most of the time).

My body and soul always feel great after completing a challenging hike.  I have never been one to work out in gyms or use fancy machines.  I think combining pleasure with exercise makes it so much easier and you feel like you’ve accomplished something.  When you hike up a huge incline or travel a great distance on foot, it is so rewarding, both inside and out! Hiking provides great benefits to the body.

I have always taken photos on outings I’ve gone on, but in the last few years, having an active blog, I have increased this quite a bit.  Sometimes hiking somewhere is the only way you can get a certain picture, travelling by foot to get to a beautiful waterfall for example so you can capture pretty images to share with others is so rewarding to me.  I also really enjoy writing about my hikes so people might be inspired to get out and do the same.

Hiking is a lot of great things, maybe some of mine are the same as some of yours. Maybe you do it for totally different reasons. Regardless, hiking has many benefits and if you haven’t already tried it, give it a shot.  I don’t think you will regret it!
